We found equipment had been serviced and maintained as required. If this service has not had a CQC inspection since it registered with us, our judgement may be based on our assessment of declarations and evidence supplied by the service. For more details - staff are happy to answer any of your questions about care. People were very positive about the meals provided and they said staff provided them with regular snacks and drinks.
Care records were up to date, had been regularly reviewed, and accurately reflected people’s care and support needs. Details of how people wished to be supported were personalised to the individual and provided clear information to enable staff to provide appropriate and effective support. Any risks in relation to people’s care and support were identified and appropriately managed. We found staff had been recruited safely, received on-going training relevant to their role and supported by the registered manager.

Clovelly House as a care home prides itself on thinking of both traditional and unusual ways to keep our residents both engaged and entertained. Tell me about Penberthy...Situated in Newquay, Penberthy is conveniently located near many lovely beaches and a busy town. With 32 bedrooms, some offering ensuite facilities, Penberthy is a cosy individual building with lovely decor and safe, enclosed gardens. The dining room overlooks the front of the property, it is a lovely space where residents can share conversation and enjoy their meals with a glass of wine or other refreshment.
On the day of the inspection the home was very clean and there were no unpleasant odours. The service was last inspected in September 2014; we had no concerns at that time. Safeguarding procedures were in place and staff had a good understanding of how to identify and act on any allegations of abuse. Care Services
There were sufficient numbers of suitably qualified staff on duty and staffing levels were adjusted to meet people’s changing needs and wishes. People’s risks were being managed effectively to ensure they were safe. Records recorded changes in people’s level of risk and how those risks were going to be managed. – there are some services which we can’t rate, while some might be under appeal from the provider. Residents and their relatives all receive an automatic 10% discount when using Be Fabulous’ facilities Lauren also often comes into the care home to give the residents manicures as well. The home had well established links with external professionals such as the district nurse service and the local general practitioners. We spoke to visiting professionals who were very positive about the staff and management of the home. There was some evidence that the administration of medication and recording regarding external medical input could be improved.
Amazing, caring and considerate staff
People told us the management had high standards and would listen if they had any concerns. Our observations of the care provided, discussions with people and records we assessed, enabled us to conclude individual wishes and needs were taken into account and respected. People who used the service said they were supported by caring, kind and professional staff. There was a friendly, calm and pleasant atmosphere on the day of the inspection. People had access to doctors, district nurses, chiropodists and opticians, although some improvement was required regarding documenting the support received from some external medical professionals. A relative told us if the doctor was called, staff would always contact them and keep them informed of any treatment.
There are a range of aids and adaptations to support people with limited mobility. This unannounced comprehensive inspection took place on the 8 January2018. The last comprehensive inspection took place on the 5 January2016. The service was meeting the requirements of the regulations at that time. People in care homes receive accommodation and nursing or personal care as single package under one contractual agreement. CQC regulates both the premises and the care provided, and both were looked at during this inspection.

Our most recent addition to the gardens is the beauty and wellness cabin; ran by Lauren Siddons, owner of Be Fabulous. Her business adds that extra little bit of glam to our care home. Lauren has a range of beauty treatments available from manicures, massages and facials, meaning the residents can enjoy that little bit of extra pampering at the end of the garden path.
Kim Marshall is Clovelly House’s registered Home Manager; working in health and social care for nearly 20 years, she has a wealth of experience that she has brought with her to Clovelly House. It is this thoughtfulness and caring attitude backed up by her knowledge of the industry which makes her a great addition to the Clovelly team. Accommodation, meals, and assistance with personal care and medication. Our infection prevention and control inspections look at how well people using a service are kept safe from the spread of infections.
The service provides single room accommodation for up to nineteen predominantly elderly people who need assistance with personal care, including those with a dementia related illness. At the time of the inspection there were fourteen people using the service. The service is situated over two floors which are serviced by a passenger lift. There are a number of rooms with en suite facilities and enough bathrooms including assisted baths on both floors. A lounge and dining room are situated on the ground floor with a conservatory at the front of the service.
The Care Home is situated in a residential area of Finchley in North London.
Here at Clovelly House we pride ourselves on our staff; all our staff have a wealth of care experience and training, and above all else a caring quality that cannot be underestimated. Our staff see, spend time and care for our residents every day, knowing them, their past and present is central to how we care for them. My 80-year-old mother has advanced dementia, she has lived in Clovelly House for over 3-years and is very well cared for. There are plenty of activities for her, and she is given lots of support and encouragement to enjoy the various activities.
CQC quoted at the inspection "People were safe and protected from avoidable harm" and "People's outcomes were consistently good and people's feedback confirmed this." In 1993 Ken & June’s son Malcolm joined the management team at the home and he has continued to promote the values and vision of his parents through into the 21st Century. In 2020 the third generation, Malcom's daughter Emma, became involved in the family business after graduation from Bath University.
