Clovelly House Care Home Care Quality Commission

Here at Clovelly House we pride ourselves on our staff; all our staff have a wealth of care experience and training, and above all else a caring quality that cannot be underestimated. Our staff see, spend time and care for our residents every day, knowing them, their past and present is central to how we care for them. My 80-year-old mother has advanced dementia, she has lived in Clovelly House for over 3-years and is very well cared for. There are plenty of activities for her, and she is given lots of support and encouragement to enjoy the various activities.

We were however able to state the service was effective, caring, responsive and well-led. We refer the reader to our report published in June 2014 which outlined our findings from that inspection. The Home specialises in providing both intermediate and long term care for vulnerable and elderly residents, including those who are mentally frail or suffering from brain injury. It aims to ensure that all residents are able to maintain a quality of life which is both individualised and responsive to their particular needs within a homely setting. Residents are thus assured of privacy, independence and dignity supported by the highest possible standards of sympathetic professional care. The owner had a strong ethos which ensured quality standards were high, and the staff team had a good understanding of providing a person centred service.

The Crescent Residential Care Home

This is an ideal lounge for some quiet time or for a more private, personal chat with relatives and friends. We also find this room is the best place to host our singers and musical entertainment who visit regularly to perform for our residents. People we spoke with said their care was unrushed and received in a way they wanted staff to provide it. From reviewing records we judged care plans as including suitable information to assist the staff who worked at the home. We prioritise this personal 1-1 care by ensuring high staffing levels are maintained at all times, resulting in a high quality of care. Further to this, all resident care plans are person centred, focusing on each individual's needs and desired outcomes. They are updated by carers, to ensure that the most up to date information is recorded and used to ensure the best possible outcomes for our guests. At our inspection in June 2014 we were concerned there had been incidents where staff had not followed correct procedures regarding the administration of nine individual dosages of medication. As a consequence we issued a compliance action as overall we could not judge the service was safe.

On the day of the inspection the home was very clean and there were no unpleasant odours. The service was last inspected in September 2014; we had no concerns at that time. Safeguarding procedures were in place and staff had a good understanding of how to identify and act on any allegations of abuse. Our most recent addition to the gardens is the beauty and wellness cabin; ran by Lauren Siddons, owner of Be Fabulous. Her business adds that extra little bit of glam to our care home. Lauren has a range of beauty treatments available from manicures, massages and facials, meaning the residents can enjoy that little bit of extra pampering at the end of the garden path.

CQC quoted at the inspection "People were safe and protected from avoidable harm" and "People's outcomes were consistently good and people's feedback confirmed this." In 1993 Ken & June’s son Malcolm joined the management team at the home and he has continued to promote the values and vision of his parents through into the 21st Century. In 2020 the third generation, Malcom's daughter Emma, became involved in the family business after graduation from Bath University.

The manager used effective systems to record and report on, accidents and incidents and take action when required. We observed staff providing support to people throughout our inspection visit. Clovelly House prides itself on the home cooked food it delivers. Our cooks freshly prepare the food we serve on the day every day, providing a full choice of breakfast, a two-course lunch, tea and supper. Clovelly House is situated within extensive, well maintained mature gardens, loved and nurtured by our gardener John who has cultivated our garden area for over 20 years. He ensures that they look beautiful all year around and are accessible for all, with decking and patios where residents may enjoy tea and cake or a glass of lemonade on a nice summer's day.

The staff are professional and friendly and I am kept informed of my mum's condition and was pleased to receive photos, handicrafts and videos sent to me when Covid restrictions prevented visits. The staff go over and above to provide social events for friends, relatives and residents. The inspectors looked at three areas of the Key Lines of Enquiries and our rating increased from inadequate to requires improvement.
